7 hair loss triggers in Women

There are so many potential triggers for hair loss in women; however there are some that are more likely than others. As there are so many, it’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason as to why your hair could be falling out.

Here are seven of the most common causes of hair loss in women – 1 - Hormonal Imbalance – If you have an imbalance of hormones then that could have some big effects on your hair. There are two types of hormones that play a role in hair life cycle. Oestrogens, these are ‘hair friendly’ and help ensure your hair is in their growth phase for the optimal length of time. Then the not so hair friendly hormones are androgens, an excess of these can cause hair loss. 2 - Iron Deficiency/anaemia - When you don’t have enough iron, your body can’t produce the haemoglobin in your blood. Haemoglobin carries oxygen for the growth and repair of cells in your body, including the cells that stimulate hair growth. 3 - Stress – Stress can raise androgen levels, which in turn can cause hair loss. Stress may also trigger scalp problems, such as dandruff, disrupt eating habits and mess with the digestive system – all of which can have a negative impact on hair. 4 - Vitamin B12 Deficiency - Vitamin B12 deficiency often causes hair loss as it can affect the health of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to your tissues. This types of hair loss occurs more often in vegans as you can only obtain B12 through animal proteins. 5 - Hydrothyroidism and hyperthyroidism – The thyroid gland helps to regulate the body's metabolism by controlling the production of proteins and tissue use of oxygen. Any thyroid imbalance can therefore affect hair follicles. 6 - Dramatic weight loss - Telogen effluvium can occur when you drop your calories down too low and you lose weight quickly. It is particularly common in eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. One of the main causes of hair loss is nutritional deficiency. If you aren’t getting the right nutrients you’ll begin to sacrifice ‘less important’ parts of your body in order to nourish the more valuable assets. 7 - Age - Hair loss becomes more prevalent leading up to and after the menopause so it’s important to realise that your hair gets thinner as we age. It’s a normal part of the aging process.
